Innovations to help people live with disease
Merck Serono is committed to bringing hope to people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. We are conducting research on innovative treatments to help manage neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease. Our focus is on groundbreaking science and patient-friendly drug delivery systems.
A blockbuster with potential
For example, we are investing in the further development of the successful multiple sclerosis treatment Rebif®. The most recent example is the market launch of a new formulation. It offers better injection tolerability and lower immunogenicity. We are working to expand the range of indications to make Rebif® a therapeutic option for patients in early stages of disease.

New mechanism of action for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease
We hope to some day be able to offer a new therapeutic option to patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Safinamide, which is an oral formulation, has a unique mode of action. Study results give reason to hope that safinamide could improve the motor function of patients. The active ingredient, which would represent a potential add-on therapy, is currently in late-stage clinical trials.
