Innovative and intuitive: Therapies for metabolic disorders

Child
Merck Serono is committed to improving the lives of people with a range of endocrine and metabolic disorders. Our scientists always have two aspects in mind. On the one hand, they are committed to developing innovative therapies. At the same time, they want to make drug administration easier for patients.
Intuitive hardware for daily life
Merck Serono launched Easypod® in 2007. It’s a novel electronic injection device for Saizen® – a drug for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency in children and adolescents. Easypod®, which has meanwhile won many awards, is the first intuitive delivery device of its kind in this therapeutic area.

Woman
We are constantly working to develop therapeutic options with recombinant human growth hormones. In November 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved EgriftaTM (tesamorelin for injection) as the first and only treatment to date indicated to reduce excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy. Egrifta was developed by Theratechnologies, a Canadian biopharmaceutical company and is being exclusively commercialized by our U.S. subsidiary EMD Serono.
Another innovative drug is already on the market in the United States: Serostim® is currently the only therapy for HIV-wasting approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Treatment of hyperphenylalaninemia
In 2009, Merck launched Kuvan® in Europe. It’s a drug that can give new hope to people with excessively high levels of the amino acid phenylalanine. If left untreated, this disorder can lead to mental retardation. Kuvan® is the first drug approved for this condition. BioMarion, Merck Serono’s partner in the development of sapropterin, received FDA approval for use in the United States. The product is to be marketed there under the brand name Kuvan®.
